56-18 January 23, 2018 RESOLUTION WHEREAS, in June 2012, United States Department of Homeland Security established relief from deportation, a Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (“DACA”), for immigrants who came to the United States as children (the “Dreamers”), and created the opportunity to apply for temporary residence and eligibility for a work permit in the United States; and WHEREAS, nearly 800,000 individuals nationally have qualified for DACA, including passing background checks; and WHEREAS, these individuals have advanced their education, started small businesses and more fully established themselves as integral contributing members of American society; and WHEREAS, on September 8, 2017, the United States Department of Homeland Security discontinued the DACA program; and WHEREAS, the United States Congress has been considering the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act (the “Dream Act”) which would provide a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers; WHEREAS, the Township seeks to support the Dreamers within the Township who have contributed to the character, culture and diversity of the community. NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE TOWNSHIP COUNCIL OF THE TOWNSHIP OF WEST ORANGE, that the Township hereby urges the Department of Homeland Security to reinstate the DACA program; and be it further RESOLVED, that the Township also urges the United States Congress to pass the Dream Act and provide a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers; RESOLVED, the Township Clerk is directed to send a copy of this Resolution to United States Senator Robert Menendez, United States Senator Cory Booker, United States

2 Representative Donald Payne, United States Representative Rodney Frelinghuysen, and Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen; and be it further RESOLVED, that a copy of this Resolution shall be made available in the Clerk’s office in accordance with applicable law.
