A maximum density of 140 pounds per cubic foot should not be exceeded in order to avoid creating excessive lateral pressure on the walls during compaction operations. Dynamic Earth recommends that backfill directly behind the walls be compacted with light, hand- held compactors. Heavy compactors and grading equipment should not be allowed to operate within a zone measured at a 45-degree angle from the base of the walls during backfilling to avoid developing excessive temporary or long-term lateral soil pressures. Resistance to sliding should be provided by friction resistance at the base of the retaining structure foundation, as detailed herein. 5.8 Seasonal High Groundwater and Soil Permeability Indicators of seasonal high groundwater (i.e. based on soil mottling) were encountered within the soil profile pit excavations at depths ranging between approximately 1.4 feet and 5.0 feet below the ground surface; corresponding to elevations ranging between approximately 621.3 feet and 612.4 feet. Groundwater was encountered at depths ranging between approximately two feet and 9.6 feet; corresponding to elevations ranging between 621.3 feet and 562.1 feet during our investigation.
