Show all pagesmonitoring air quality since 1965. During that time, as a result of state, regional and national air pollution reduction efforts, pollution levels have improved significantly. This report includes detailed chapters for ozone, particulate matter, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide and lead. These are the criteria pollutants, that is, those for which National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS), or criteria, have been set. Other measurements made at our air monitoring stations and discussed in this report include air toxics, ozone precursors, and chemical components of airborne fine particles. The Air Quality Index (AQI) is a national air quality rating system based on the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS). An index value of 100 is equal to the primary, or health-based, NAAQS for each pollutant. This allows for a comparison of each of the pollutants used in the AQI. These pollutants are ozone, particulate matter, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide. Although air concentrations of pollutants have been dropping over the past few years, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) periodically reviews the NAAQS to make sure that they are protective of public health, and adjusts them accordingly in response to new research.” Environmental Impact Statement 5 June 2024 DEC #1021-99-025
