This bill provides for parity between the public and independent institutions of higher education, which are both providing a vital public mission to the State and its citizens, and would place the same requirements for consultation with local officials on independent institutions as are currently in place for the public colleges and universities. Committee Amendments The committee amended the bill to place all private nonprofit colleges in the same status as State colleges under the "Municipal Land Use Law," P.L.1975, ¢.291 (C.40:55D-1 et seq.), by deleting the language requiring that these colleges receive financial assistance under the “Independent College and University Assistance Act," pursuant to P.L.1979, c.132 (C.18A:72B-15 et seq.) because not all of these colleges are eligible for this financial assistance.
