GLEN RIDGE LIBRARY ADDITION Owner Glen Ridge Library Project Location Glen Ridge, NJ Project Square Footage 4,600 sf Addition The Glen Ridge Library was in need of ad- ditional space and the adjacent municipal building required handicap accessibility. The project consists of new building addition be- tween two historic buildings in the Borough of Glen Ridge, New Jersey. The existing Glen Ridge Municipal Building and Public Library were built in the early 1900’s and are his- torically designated. the Musial Group was charged with introducing a connecting link between the two buildings and blend in with the existing appearance. The project also in- cludes handicapped access to the new and existing spaces. We were able to accomplish this with a new elevator in the addition and a handicapped lift at the library reading loft. The exterior materials were selected to match the existing brick and stone finishes, and the clay roof tiles blend in with the existing library roof. The project was reviewed and approved by the State of New Jersey Department of Envi- ronmental Protection & Energy, Natural & His- toric Resources, Division of Parks & Forestry as well as the Office of New Jersey Heritage. BEECHWOOD SCHOOL Owner Moun s Board of Education Project Location Mountainside, NJ Project Square Footage 38,090 sf Date 2004 Project Features coms | Library Confronted with a changing demographic, the Borough of Mountainside was faced with over-extended facilities. The Musial Group was asked to perform a feasibility study to assess how the town’s assets could be uti- lized to address the marked increase in school enrollment. At the time, the borough had one public elementary school utilized by the community while the Beechwood facility was being leased to a private institution. The newly adopted strategic plan reconfigured the Beechwood school to accomodate PK through second grades. Since Beechwood had not been used as a public school for many years, room sizes and functions were re-configured to meet the DOE requirements for SCC funding. The additions were seen as an opportunity to develop a more intimate relationship with the rolling hills and adjacent forest that character- ize the site. Framed views and dappled light contribute to the identity of experiences while serene “exterior rooms” invite the picturesque landscape to become a pedagogic tool. The personal scale of the addition remediates the dogmatic 1960's facade with the resultant being a more amiable and nurturing environ- ment. THE MUSIAL GROUP ARCHITECTURE
